J&J Travelling fellows & UPOA Travelling fellows arrived at Kolkata on 10th December 2018.

They visited Fortis Hospital on 10.12.2018, R.G. Kar Medical College on 11.12.2018, Joint & Bone Care Hospital on 11.12.2018, Appollo Hospital on 12.12.2018 and SSKM Hospital on 13.12.2018.

Felicitation at WBOA office was done on 13.12.2018. They appreciated the hospitality and academic journey of different institute.

Kolkata visit


Kolkata was third city where we visited various centres of Excellence. Our flight landed at Kolkata airport at 10 am in the morning on 10th Dec. 2018.  We checked- in @the Pearl hotel ,which was a pleasant and hospitable stay throughout. Fortis Hospital visit on Day 1,where Dr. Rakesh Rajput showed us different varieties of Total knee replacement surgeries,focussing mainly on Gap Balancing technique of TKR. He shared with us his experience in joint replacement surgeries. After post-lunch session was well taken care off by Dr. Gaurav Gupta ,by his presentation on Shoulder arthroscopy and sports medicine.  In the evening all fellows enjoyed special Bengali food dinner with Dr. Rakesh Rajput.

 On second day ,we visited the R.G.Kar Medical College at 9am and had cup of tea with the departmental faculty and then went to Operation theatre. There we saw case of complex primary THR in an adult operated by Dr. Sunit Hajra. We also observed arthroscopic ACL and LCL reconstruction done by Dr. Sunit Hajra. Another team visited JBCH, where Dr. Joydeep demonstrated TKR and Dr. Rajeev Raman simplified arthroscopic PCL in a lucid surgery.

In the night we had dinner with Dr. Rajeev Raman and faculty members of R.G.Kar Medical College,WBOA office.

On third day we went to Apollo hospital where our host was Dr. Manabedra Basu. We went to OT where we observed multiple TKRs and one case of arthroscopic medial meniscus repair and ACL reconstruction. We also saw OLIF, TLIF and vertebroplasty done by Dr. Abrar Ahmed. After having lunch at 2pm we went to the seminar room for an academic discussion. We discussed the cases related to wrist trauma and cervical spine injuries. At 5pm we had coffee with them and left the hospital. All evenings were free for recreations, leisure and savour the taste of Kolkata.

On 4th day we visited the IPGMER where we had a warm welcome and felicitation by Prof. A.K.Pal, Head of the Orthopaedics department at the institute. In the morning we had discussion on the currently running thesis projects by  PG students on proximal Tibia, Elbow arthroplasty, and M pattern TBW of patella and Kolkata/Indian version of the scores to predict osteoporotic fractures. Thanks to Dr. Tanmay Datta, for planning  and execution of all events in the institute.

After this we went to OT complex where we saw an interesting case of habitual dislocation of patella planned for Pesplasty by Prof. A.K.Pal. We also observed TFL muscle pedicle graft for AVN hip in adult, total elbow arthroplasty using sloppy hinge prosthesis in a rheumatoid elbow. We had lunch in the Hospital and then we left the hospital at 3 pm.

We reached WBOA office at 4PM. Meeting there with WBOA officials and members was exciting and memorable. A well maintained library was there in WBOA house. All fellows shared their experience during Kolkata visit. There were suggestions to include more cases of joint preserving surgeries and giving opportunity to fellows to present their own work. All the fellows expressed their gratefulness to the WBOA for the nice arrangements. We left for Delhi with a lot of new ideas and sweet memories.
